Russian President Vladimir Putin mocked special counsel Robert Mueller investigation Tuesday, saying that the final report proved that Moscow ‘has not meddled in any U.S. election.”
In his first remarks about the report since Mueller ended his investigation, Putin said: “It was clear for us from the start that it would end like this,” the Putin said of the Mueller’s probe. “A mountain gave birth to a mouse.”
Although Mueller did not find collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia, he did issue an indictment against 13 Russians associated with a Saint Petersburg-based firm called the Internet Research Agency, saying that the group planned to target the 2016 U.S. election.
The Russian leader was speaking to the Arctic Forum in Saint Petersburg. “We have been saying from the start that this notorious commission led by Mr. Mueller won’t find anything, because no one knows better than us: Russia has not meddled in any U.S. election,” Putin said at the Arctic Forum. “There was no collusion between Trump and Russia that Mr. Mueller was looking for.”
“Look what is going on now. Those groups which are attacking the legitimately elected president, what are they doing?” They disagree with the choice of the American people and seek to reduce the results to zero. This is a crisis of a political system, which we have never seen in U.S. history.”
Putin insisted he was not a Trump supporter. “I’m not defending President Trump, we have plenty of disagreements,” he said. “His administration has introduced numerous sanctions against Russia, something we disagree with and will never accept. We consider it counterproductive.”
When asked if he supported Trump in his 2020 reelection bid, Putin said he would “respect the choice of the American people.“
