House Democrats are preparing to impeach President Donald Trump in early 2018, according to a new report in Newsweek.
This week’s Judiciary Committee win for Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York, a constitutional law expert who’s previously dealt with Trump, signaled Democrats are prepping for an impeachment battle with the embattled Republican Trump, according to The Washington Post.
“Look, Robert S. Mueller III is on the case,” said Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Ill.), from a western Illinois district that swung to Trump last year. “We’ve got to let him do what he’s going to do and let the facts go wherever they’re going to go. In the end the truth comes out, but I don’t think we need to rush anything more than that.”
Bustos had a one-word reply when asked what issues Democrats need to focus on in the next 11 months: “Jobs.” – according to The Washington Post.
Nadler has made his position on Trump crystal clear–and he wants him gone. When Michael Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in early December, Nadler said there is “more than enough evidence” to impeach Trump for obstruction of justice.
In a prepared statement, Nadler said, “There is now more than enough evidence to form the basis of a congressional investigation into the President’s obstruction of justice — and it is long past time that the House Committee on the Judiciary engage on this matter.”
Nadler could lead the initial charge in impeachment proceedings before a vote on House floor, followed by a trial in the Senate.
Some prominent Democrats, however, have stated that impeachment would be a bad idea. Surprisingly, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi came out against the idea. She said, “Republicans would love for us to make our campaign about the impeachment of Trump. That’s not what it’s about. It’s about the well-being of American families. He’s just not that important. Impeachment would further divide us, not bring us together.”
Interestingly, Pelosi is correct–the Democrats HAVE made their identity about Donald Trump.
The left has become the “Party of No,” shaping their identity around getting rid of Trump instead of offering uplifting policies that will help the American people. Most House Democrats have shown that they will do whatever possible to obstruct Trump, even if their obstruction hurts the general population. We saw that sentiment play out in the votes to repeal Obamacare and pass tax reform–neither bill received a single Democrat vote.
If the Democrats do try to impeach Trump next year, do you think it will hurt their party?
