Former U.S. Attorney under President Barack Obama, Joyce White Vance, who is also an MSNBC contributor, deleted a Sunday tweet that falsely claimed Fox News would not be airing Robert Mueller’s testimony.
“Fox isn’t showing Mueller’s testimony Wednesday. Trump is afraid of what will happen if his base gets to hear Mueller’s testimony for themselves,” Vance tweeted, before quickly scrubbing it.
Fox News and most other news networks are planning to broadcast former special counsel Robert Mueller’s expected testimony before Congress on Wednesday, in which he will discuss his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Vance, 58, served as the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama from 2009 to 2017.
Many were perplexed by Vance’s tweet, which failed to source any report that reflected the same information. Hours later, Vance tweeted a reply to her first message with a claim that she was joking, saying, “Y’all, a kind friend pointed out my goofy sense of humor doesn’t always translate onto Twitter. I know most of you get the irony by now. It will be interesting to see Fox’s coverage in light of Trump’s statement he won’t be watching the hearing.”
President Trump, who has repeatedly denied any collusion with the Russian government or further obstruction of justice, announced to curious reporters on Friday that he would not be watching Mueller’s testimony on Wednesday.
Several hours after Vance asserted that she was joking, she deleted the original message entirely with an apology message that said, “I’ve deleted an earlier tweet I intended ironically, but that some took as factual regarding Fox news coverage of Mueller’s testimony. My apologies to anyone I confused. I don’t like to delete tweets but that seems a better course than unintentionally misinforming people.”
Vance contributes to MSNBC, where she regularly provides commentary and analysis on Mueller.
