House Intelligence Committee member Eric Swalwell insists President Trump is lying about his ties to agents of the Russian government, despite Attorney General William Barr’s summary of the Mueller investigation report exonerating Trump from the Russia collusion allegations.
The California Democrat, who is rumored to be mulling a 2020 presidential bid, said “the only person who has been caught lying about Russia is the president” during a Fox News interview, adding that Trump is working to advance Russia’s strategic interests.
“He said he had no business dealings with Russia and we have now learned that he had business dealings going all the way up to and beyond the primaries,” Swalwell said.
“Donald Trump works on Russia’s behalf,” he added. “When he meets with Vladimir Putin he won’t tell the country what was said, and he essentially took the notes from the interpreter.” That was a reference to Trump’s private two-hour meeting with Putin in Helsinki last year.
Barr sent a letter to the leaders of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees last weekend briefing them of the “principal conclusions” in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.
The letter, which is four pages long, said Mueller found no evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. Mueller also declined to determine whether Trump obstructed justice, and Barr said he and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein concluded there was insufficient evidence to show the president committed a crime.
Trump says Barr’s memo shows Mueller has exonerated him. Democrats are demanding the entire Mueller report be released to the public.
Despite Mueller concluding his investigation, Trump, his connections, and his finances, are still being investigated on a multitude of fronts, including by the House Intelligence Committee, now led by Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif.
