Former secretary of state Hillary Clinton said at an event on Wednesday that she thinks being a capitalist probably hurt her among the Democratic base.
At the Shared Value Leadership Summit, Clinton was asked if being a capitalist hurt her chances at winning the election, noting that she was specifically asked during a debate if she is a capitalist. She argued that she was “probably” hurt by being a capitalist because so many Democratic primary voters identify as socialists.
“Probably,” Clinton said with a smirk. “You know, it’s hard to know but if you’re in the Iowa caucuses and 41 percent of Democrats are socialist — or self-described socialists — and I’m asked ‘are you a capitalist?’ and I say, ‘yes but with appropriate regulation and appropriate accountability,’ that probably gets lost in the ‘Oh my gosh she’s a capitalist!’”
