CNN’s Brian Stelter is more than just a little bit excited about the possibility of Oprah Winfrey challenging President Donald Trump in the 2020 race for the White House; fawning over the prospect in dozens of clips, appearances, and interviews.
The Washington Free Beacon compiled Stelter’s greatest hits into a highlight reel of the network’s senior media correspondent breathlessly covering Winfrey’s highly-publicized acceptance speech at the 75thannual Golden Globe Awards, saying he began calling her closest confidants “the minute she finished that speech.”
The morning after the Golden Globes, Stelter frequently speculated about Winfrey running for president. That afternoon, Stelter reported that sources close to Winfrey said that she is “actively thinking” about running for president.
The two friends, who requested anonymity in order to speak freely, talked in the wake of Winfrey’s extraordinary speech at the Golden Globes Sunday night, which spurred chatter about a 2020 run.
Some of Winfrey’s confidants have been privately urging her to run, the sources said.
One of the sources said these conversations date back several months. The person emphasized that Winfrey has not made up her mind about running.
Winfrey herself has not officially commented on the 2020 speculation.
“Her speech at the Golden Globes seemed downright presidential,” says Stelter, as the classic Whitney Houston rendition of “I Will Always Love You” blares in the background. “And what a speech it was. In some ways we’ve seen this speech go viral.”
Stelter responded to the hilarious video on social media Wednesday, stating, “An accurate headline would say ‘CNN Is Reporting On The Possibility Of Oprah 2020.’”
